the iyengar method

The Iyengar method of hatha yoga is  learnt through the  study of asanas (posture) and pranayama (breath control).

Iyengar yoga emphazises precise alignment  (detailed instructions are given to the student to give the student access to the body beyond the outer, skeletal and muscular body into the subtleties of the mind); holding the postures for different lengths of time (for a more profound exploration of a physical or mental challenge of the pose) and practicing asanas in particular sequences (in which a powerful cumulative effect is achieved as each posture has different effects on body & mind).

As the physical conditions and needs of each student are different, postures can be practiced safely and more effectively with the use of props like blocks, belts, bolsters, chairs and ropes. The support, force and resistance from props allows you to attain a pose with more depth and awareness.

With a lot of practice the student progresses. He gains not only flexibility, strength and sensitivity in the body, but also in mind & spirit.
